Sažetak
Land consolidation is a precondition for good design and implementation of land hydroamelioration works. Topographic, hydrological, climate and soil data are of primary importance in the search for optimum technical and financial solutions of hydroamelioration works and systems. A part of this is the regulation and maintenance of the water-air regime in the soil, in accordance with the requirements of optimum development of the crops and achieving of stable yields. Between 1956 and 1975, land consolidation in Croatia was carried on 460,608 ha, and land amelioration on 423,760 ha (92 percent). From 1976 to 1990, land consolidation was carried out on 218,829 ha, and land amelioration on 207,888 ha (95 percent). Most of the land consolidation works were carried out in the regions of Slavonia and Baranja 490,484 ha, with completed amelioration works on all areas. This makes 72.2 percent of all land consolidation works and 77.7 percent of all land amelioration works in Croatia in the period from 1956 to 1990. Unfortunately, due to the state of war in 1991 and to the general situation in agriculture, land consolidation and amelioration works were not carried out in Croatia in the period from 1991 to 2000. The effects of completed land consolidation and amelioration works have been demonstrated by increased yields of the basic agricultural crops by 35.3 to 80.8 percent, compared to the previous level of production. The particular importance of land consolidation and hydroamelioration is in the formation of agricultural parcels (plots) of larger areas and regular shapes, which allows more rational use of farm machinery and vehicles in soil preparation and crop cultivation. Land consolidation and land amelioration is a component of the programme of successful development of agriculture as a strategic component of the overall development of the national economy in the Republic of Croatia.
