Sažetak

Osteoporosis is the most common chronic metabolic bone disease, characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue. Imbalance of bone turnover plays a key role in the pathophysiology of osteoporosis. Genetic, hormonal, immunological and other factors affect bone remodeling and contribute to osteoporosis. Nowadays, the important role of RANK/RANKL/OPG system in the pathophysiology of osteoporosis is well known, but the exact mechanisms are continuously being unraveled. Osteoporosis and sarcopenia often coexist and are associated with substantial burden for older people in terms of morbidity and mortality. Understanding the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and osteosarcopenia is key to developing combined strategies for treatment and prevention.
