Premature Ovarian Failure and Osteoporosis

Abstract

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is the term used to describe cessation of ovarian functioning in women under 40. The condition is marked by amenorrhoea, hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, and infertility. POF is a devastating diagnosis for reproductive-aged women. The clinical presentation and possible causes are diverse. POF may lead to serious health disorders including psychological distress, infertility, osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases, ischaemic heart disease, and increased risk of mortality. Treatment should be initiated immediately to prevent long-term consequences. Non-pharmacological strategies and lifestyle changes are first-line interventions in the case of decreased BMD, together with calcium and vitamin D supplements. HRT should provide hormonal balance and mimic normal ovarian function as much as possible.
