Myxomatous valvular degeneration – endocardiosis in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Sažetak
Myxomatous valvular degeneration (endocardiosis) is the most common cardiovascular lesion in dogs and is a significant cause of clinically evident left heart failure. Morphologically, it is characterized by shrunken, thickened and distorted atrioventricular valves, and it occurs most often in toy, small and medium dog breeds, and is more common in males. It is believed that the cause of the degenerative changes is a genetic disorder, which is supported by the fact that this disease is hereditary in Cavalier King Charles spaniels and dachshunds. This article presents the macroscopic and histopathological findings of myxomatous valvular degeneration in a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, which was dissected at the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb.
