Abstract

The origins of the present-day Collection of School Equipment and Items are associated with the establishment of the Croatian Educational & Literary Assembly in 1871 – a trade organization of teachers who also started to work on collecting materials for what was to become the Croatian School Museum as soon as the Assembly was established. In 1901, when the Museum presented its first permanent exhibition, the Collection of Teaching Tools and School Equipment comprised 4935 objects.
The Collection eventually became part of the large Collection of Teaching Tools and School Equipment, including students’ and teachers’ works and visual artwork, and has in 2011 become an independent Collection of School Equipment and Items preserving numerous types of objects made of various materials and having various dimensions. They mostly include school furniture (tables, chairs, desks, cabinets), school bells, flags, school bags, seal rings of old schools and educational and pedagogical associations, school awards and medals, uniforms, badges, teachers’ personal items, as well as other items telling stories of school life.
Materials have been constantly collected through donations or by repurchasing them from school equipment manufacturers, schooling, educational, pedagogical and cultural institutions and societies, and individuals. The collection presently comprises over 3000 objects dating back to between the late 18th century and the present day and is still being supplemented by historical and modern objects relevant to the investigation and development of schooling, primarily in the Republic of Croatia.
