Abstract

Good leadership is important for organizational success. Therefore, it seems alarming that about half of managers fail at their jobs. Some of this can be attributed to poor assessment of leadership potential competencies in human resource management processes such as selection or advancement/succession. The aim of this paper was to give a qualitative review of the five well– known psychological models of generic managerial competencies and to identify the most appropriate model for the development of a scientifically valid system for the assessment and development of leadership potential. After comparing the five models, it was found that they share three types of competencies applicable to any managerial position: strategic competencies, interpersonal competencies and leadership competencies. These competencies represent the leadership potential of an individual. The model that emerged as the most appropriate for assessing and developing leadership potential was Hogan’s model. This was the first paper that reviewed and evaluated these well-established psychological managerial competency models. This review explored and laid a solid scientific base for the assessment and better understanding of leadership potential. This can result in both better research of leadership and better practices.
