Sažetak

Due to medical advances and improvements in health care, in our daily clinical work we see more and more children with respiratory diseases whose pathology is not primarily pulmonological. The majority of these patients are children with severe neurological damage, primarily cerebral palsy, but also numerous other conditions that result in severe motor deficits and cause respiratory failure as the clinical picture develops. Despite the different etiologies of the underlying diseases, the pathophysiologic mechanisms for the development of respiratory failure are generally the same. Knowledge of these mechanisms is essential to make correct diagnostic
and therapeutic decisions, especially early recognition of nocturnal hypoventilation and timely initiation of noninvasive mechanical ventilation, ultimately slowing the development of the clinical picture and improving the quality of life of these patients.
