On the Sources of Balkanism: Imagological Analysis of the Work De Europa by Enea Silvio Piccolomini

Starting from the critique of Todorova's assumption that the Balkanistic discourse started forming at the end of the early modern period, the central interest of this thesis is placing the formative moment of the Balkanistic images in the period of renaissance humanism. The backbone of this paper is the imagological analysis of the chorographical work De Europa written in 1458 by renaissance humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini, better known as Pope Pius II. The analysis strives to detect a manner in which Piccolomini shapes images of Europe and its constitutive parts and it is focused on Southeastern Europe i.e. the Balkans, with the intention of relating it to the later Balkanistic discourses. Interpretative analysis of Piccolomini's work methodologically relies on the three-dimensional analytical model of historical discourse analysis. The textual analysis is concerned with detecting images according to principles of classical chorography and determining their axiological values. The intertextual analysis deals with determining Piccolomini's explicit and implicit references to classical and contemporary authors. At last, the contextual analysis strives to comprehend Piccolomini's image of Europe in the context of humanistic identity models and its pragmatic and political functions.
