Treatment and Control of Bitch Reproduction With GnRH Analogues and Antiprogesterones

Sažetak
Although there is no ideal pharmacological preparation, especially for the induction and prevention of estrus, today there are several options that can be accessed in consultation with a veterinarian. Most of these preparations are not registered for use for the stated purposes, but research shows that they have a satisfactory effect. Their advantage is that they have rare side effects, they have improved the treatment of some conditions that previously required surgical intervention, and due to their prolonged effect and method of application, they are practical for owners and less stressful for animals. This progress has been achieved with the use of GnRH agonist and antiprogesterone implants. The first preparation, after its successful initial use as contraception for male dogs, soon began to be used in bitches for the same purpose. Its only drawback was that it caused estrus in the bitch before contraception, but on the other hand, it turned out to be useful if the owner wanted to achieve estrus in the bitch. The greatest advantage of at GnRH implant is its prolonged action, which reduces the need for daily visits to the veterinarian. Progesterone antagonists were originally used for abortion in bitches, because they caused luteolysis of the corpus luteum, but they soon found their use in the treatment of pathological conditions such as open and closed pyometra, and endometrial cystic hyperplasia. The advantages of both hormones are that they are extremely effective, they can be applied several times in a row, and in addition to all that, they have rare side effects, which, if they occur, can be easily resolved by stopping their use.
