Sažetak

Archaeological supervision and rescue excavations were carried out in Zadar in 2006 and 2007 during construction of a new infrastructure network and waste water collector. The operations extended from Put Murvice [Murvica Road] to Trg Petra Zoranića [Petar Zoranić Square], or rather to the end of Medulićeva ulica [Medulić Street]. Thorough archaeological rescue excavations were carried out at Petar Zoranić Square, particularly as important archaeological finds were expected at this position. These expectations were based on the fact that in 1908 a trench had been opened for excavation by J. Bersa at this location. In relation to the previous knowledge that we inherited from the beginning of the 20th century, the most recent rescue excavations have offered an entire series of new and more complete insights into the fortification system of Zadar from early antiquity to the 13th century AD, along with a new Roman epigraphic find. It was discovered as spolia on the exterior side of the medieval gate. This was the central epigraphic section of a Roman funerary stele with a completely preserved inscription field and inscription. The commemorator on the stele was Lucius Peticius Helius, the freedman of Lucius Peticius, who erected the monument to himself and his wife Fabia Veneria while still alive. According to the onomastic and paleographic characteristics, it can be concluded that the monument was created at the end of the 1st century or in the 2nd century AD.
