Peacock – Kantharos – Grape Bunch – Cross

Sažetak

In this article, the author attempts to connect the symbols or eucharistic motifs of the bird – peacock, as well as the kàntharos, grape bunch and cross, into a logical and recognizable unit with a clear message. The point of origin of these symbols and messages is located and recognized throughout the broad area of Europe and its circum Mediterranean regions, and the article traces them, primarily on the territory of Croatia, from the Roman period, through late Antiquity, and during the early Middle Ages. This section of the universal European cultural heritage is then joined by comparative archaeological and illuminated manuscript material from neighboring European regions. Individual masterpieces are cited of Carolingian provenience with symbols of peacocks, kantharoi, grape bunches, and crosses, which are presented in a logical relation to specific early medieval examples, particularly in the sphere of sacral arts and crafts in early medieval Croatia. A special prominence is understandably given to these interesting examples, their origin is identified, and their constant appearance over the centuries is traced.
