Sažetak

The historians of German-speaking regions who were active in the period from Humanism to the 18th century evaluated the person and works of Diocletian primarily in terms of his responsibility for the most extensive persecution of Christians in history. Little attention was paid to his internal political reforms, other than the introduction of the tetrarchical imperial system. Such a view was offered by authors who followed the general line of Eusebius of Cesarea, supplemented further by Lactantius' work De mortibus persecutorum, discovered in the year 1678. Considerable attention was also paid to Eutropius. Rarely did they attempt to depict the political activities of Diocletian in a comprehensive manner. Johannes Cuspinianus wrote one such survey, bearing witness to his deep knowledge of the
then relevant historical sources.
