Overview of Graphic Variables in Cartography

Sažetak

Graphical variables are differences in map elements perceived by the human eye. Cartographers use graphic variables to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner. Numerous authors have written about the use of graphical variables in cartography, providing guidance on how to select the appropriate graphical variable for the type of data being presented, as well as the need to consider interactions between graphical variables when creating maps. Jacques Bertin was one of the first to emphasize the importance of selecting the appropriate graphical variable for the type of data being represented and the need to consider the interaction between them. He defined size, shape, color tone, color brightness, orientation and texture as basic graphic variables. Other authors continued to develop Bertin's work and identified several additional graphics variables, including color saturation, pattern arrangement, sharpness, resolution, transparency, and perspective height. This paper presents an overview of graphic variables from a cartographic perspective, emphasizes the importance of considering perceptual and cognitive factors that influence how people interpret graphic information, and provides guidelines for updating terminology in the Croatian language. Graphical variables are essential in cartography and data visualization design to represent differences in data. The use of appropriate graphical variables is essential to effectively communicate information to the target audience.
