Sažetak
Short bowel syndrome is a malabsorption disorder that usually occurs secondary to extensive resection of the small intestine. Clinical symptoms depend on the extent of the surgical intervention and the site of resection, as well as on the ability of the rest of the intestine to compensate functionally. Short bowel syndrome is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, but despite numerous complications, with a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, it is possible to achieve adequate patient stabilization and provide them with a certain quality of life. In this paper, we present the case of a 75-year-old female patient who underwent 2 extensive intestinal resections with the formation of a permanent jejunostomy, which resulted in short bowel syndrome, which was manifested by frequent dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and infections that required frequent hospital treatment, during which the patient’s condition was complicated by acute respiratory failure. This case report undoubtedly confirms the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of patients with short bowel syndrome.
