Abstract

The last two decades have seen significant proliferation of arts and literature in Brazil,
where the production and performances of peripheral artists and groups, such as hiphop,
graffiti, marginal literature and slam poetry fill spaces that art and culture did not
reach before due to social segregation. Nowadays, this cultural expression is an example
of resistance and it is creating new political meanings. Suburban cultural manifestations
exhibit some new approaches and changes in both the creation and dissemination of
art. This article is based on the presentation given at the conference 100 Years of Romance
Language Studies in Zagreb: Tradition, Contacts, Perspectives in Zagreb and aims to outline
this very diverse and rich movement of today briefly, thus opening up a discussion on
the limits of the new brazilian literary frontiers.
