Abstract

This paper presents the biography of Antun Medo (c. 1546–1603), a Ragusan commoner merchant and an Aristotelian philosopher, firmly embedded in its sociohistorical context of the second half of the 16th-century Ragusa. At times uncritically taken over from Ignazio Giorgi (1675–1737) and other early biographers of prominent Ragusan authors and scholars, biographical information about Antun Medo is here corrected, expanded upon, and contextualized on the basis of novel insights gained through archival research.

Keywords
