Abstract

Avian influenza is a contagious viral disease with
zoonotic potential caused by the viruses from the
Alphainfluenzavirus genus of the Orthomyxoviridae
family, which can cause serious losses in poultry industries. Avian influenza is divided into low pathogenic and highly pathogenic subtypes. The subtypes
are continuously monitored in poultry, game birds and
wild bird populations using molecular and virology diagnostic methods, with intensive biosafety measures.
Since avian influenza is present in the majority of the
European Union (EU) measure recommendations and
revisions are carried out on both the individual state
level, and the EUlevel. Biosafety measures encompass
the whole process, including health monitoring and
surveillance in wild bird populations, health monitoring on poultry farms, waste and carcass disposal,
disinfection, reduction of contact between animals, together with personnel hygiene and hygiene of other
people in contact with sick or potentionally sick animals, and objects and materials. Supervision, follow
up revisions and functioning communication between
competent bodies and stakeholders are essential for
proper disease management.
