Abstract

Athletic disciplines of sprinting after the amputation of the lower limb, in addition to the specific training process and the development of numerous sprinting motor skills, also require an additional focus on the prosthetic phase and rehabilitation after amputation. This paper presents the biomechanical changes and adaptations of athletes when running after the amputation of the lower limb, the prosthetic phase, sports issues and the training process. The problems faced by athletes after amputation, such as the various compensatory responses of the body, and the difficulty of integrating the prosthesis as a non-belonging part into daily sports life, are emphasized. The importance of physiotherapists in a multidisciplinary approach to this problem is especially pointed out. Since each person’s body is unique, during rehabilitation and training after amputation, each athlete should be approached with a completely individualized program. An optimal physiotherapy assessment, focused not only on a set of objective tests but through a complete biopsychosocial approach, provides great security, respectively. The paper provides an insight into the complexity of this field, considering various research regarding athletics, sports after amputation, biomechanics, and the rehabilitation of amputees.
