Sažetak

Over the last decades, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of hypertension in children, particularly primary hypertension, closely associated with the obesity epidemic and lifestyle changes. The prevalence of hypertension in children ranges from 2% to 7%, reaching up to 10% in adolescents, and as high as 15% in obese children. The role of primary healthcare physicians in early detection of hypertension in children and timely planning of appropriate treatment is of utmost importance. Despite recommendations and guidelines from the 2016 European Society of Hypertension (ESH) and the 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizing the need for regular blood pressure measurements, adherence to these instructions is not optimal. The issue is particularly disturbing in younger children with secondary hypertension, which often requires thorough evaluation and, in most cases, medication-based treatment. Delayed recognition of secondary hypertension can lead to severe health consequences if not identified in a timely manner.
