Hungarian Drama in the Theatres of Dalmatia – Split

Since the beginning of the 20th century, theatres in Dalmatia – from Zadar through Šibenik and Split to Dubrovnik – have been staging dramatic, musical and dance works by Hungarian composers. This repertory is dominated by entertaining theatre pieces, comedies and especially operettas by world-famous Hungarian authors. This study focuses on the reception in Split of the works of authors such as Gábor Drégely, Ladislas Fodor, Melchior Lengyel, Franz Molnar, Paul Abraham and Emmerich Kálmán. The critical response to Hungarian theatre works premiered in Split is often determined by negative opinions about the authors’ country of origin, although neither the authors themselves nor the literary aspects of their works can be considered typically Hungarian from an ethnostereotypical point of view. These authors have spent part of their literary careers abroad, where their works have been met with resounding success. In the case of musical genres, some Hungarian operettas have been negatively evaluated by critics because they were considered as rivals to Croatian operettas.
