Sažetak

Of the total amount of urban wastewater in the Republic of Croatia, about 80% is treated prior to its discharge into the environment. This amount of treated urban wastewater includes the implementation of different treatment levels. Depending on the settlement size, wastewater is treated in conventional wastewater treatment plants or alternative plants, such as constructed wetlands and wastewater lagoons as well. By joining the European Union, the Republic of Croatia assumed the rights and obligations applied in the European Union. In order to ensure the treatment of wastewater, it is also necessary, in addition to treatment plants, to have an adequate integrated sewerage system and the population connected to it. The management of sludge from wastewater treatment plants should be aligned with the principles of the Circular Economy Action Plan. A continuous decline in population, particularly in smaller settlements, enables the use of different, more environmentally friendly wastewater collection and treatment systems. The paper will provide a comparative overview of the status of urban wastewater treatment in the Republic of Croatia and in selected EU countries.
