Abstract

The thoracic cavity is an anatomical space enclosed dorsally by the vertebrae, ventrally by the sternum, and laterally by the ribs. It is the most common bite site in small dogs and cats, affecting on average 10 to 15% of all trauma, and accounts for 22 to 35% of all bite sites. It is associated with a higher lethality rate than bite wounds affecting other body areas. Treatment for dogs with bite wounds consists of primary stabilization, clinical examination and additional diagnostic tests that enable doctors to decide about further
treatment. Animals can be treated conservatively or may undergo surgery, if necessary.
