Sažetak
Onions are plant species belonging to the Amaryllidaceae J.St.-Hil. family and are cultivated for their bulbs, such as garlic (Allium sativum L.), onion (Allium cepa L.), and other less important species. In Croatia, there has been a negative trend in onion production in recent years, with unfavorable weather conditions and disease outbreaks cited as reasons. One common disease is Fusarium wilt of onions, caused by fungi from the Fusarium genus. Among the most common causative agents are Fusarium proliferatum (Matsush.) Nirenberg ex Gerlach & Nirenberg and F. oxysporum Schltdl. Disease symptoms include yellowing and curling of leaves, the appearance of brown lesions, and rotting of bulbs. The disease poses a problem both in the field and during storage, spreading through soil, plant residues, and planting material. Although no fungicide is registered in Croatia for treating garlic against this disease, research has shown that combinations of certain fungicides and the antagonistic fungus Trichoderma spp. are effective in suppressing the growth of Fusarium spp. on garlic. Despite the challenges, adherence to preventive measures can contribute to reducing the spread of Fusarium wilt. The objectives of this study were to identify the disease-causing agents in the collected garlic samples from Poreč, describe the typical symptoms that appear on garlic during infection, outline the modes of transmission, and present the possible disease control methods.
