Diagnosis and treatment of lens luxation in dogs

Sažetak

The lens of the eye is held in position by zonular fibers whose abnormal development, degeneration or rupture can reduce their function and result in a change in lens position. Subluxation of the lens is the initial stage in the luxation process, and is manifested by the instability of the lens. It can be noticed as early as at twenty months of age. Lens luxation can be primary, congenital, and secondary, and also anterior and posterior by position. In some breeds, lens luxation is associated with ADAMTS17 gene mutation. Early detection of clinical signs plays a major role in preventing the development of the disease. The surgical technique most often used for lens luxation correction is intracapsular lens extraction, with or without fixation of a new lens in the sulcus, phacoemulsification, or the insertion of capsular tension rings. Anterior luxation of the lens can also be treated with transcorneal reposition. Diagnosis and treatment of lens luxation is a frequent challenge for veterinarians, and early diagnosis and prompt treatment of urgent conditions play a major role in success.
