Sažetak
Approximately 5 to 10% of patients in the emergency department have altered mental status, which is considered as a significant sign of the illness. Elderly patients and patients with concomitant medical conditions, especially those affecting the central nervous system, have an increased risk. Because altered mental status is a symptom of various conditions and diseases, differential diagnosis is challenging for physicians. Using the fundamental emergency care principles of emergency medicine and the ABCDE approach, the cause of the altered mental status can be suspected during the patient’s first encounter. Initial stabilization and clinical assessment are prioritized to direct the physician towards more target therapy of the underlying cause. These clinical guidelines aim to facilitate and enhance the recognition and initial management of patients with altered mental status.
