Sažetak
Sepsis is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. The incidence of sepsis and septic shock has been continuously increasing since the consensus definition in 1991, and today it represents the tenth most common cause of death in the population. The overall burden of sepsis is difficult to determine, with an estimated 48.9 million cases and 11 million sepsis-related deaths worldwide in 2017, accounting for nearly 20% of all global deaths. In septic shock as a subset of sepsis, hospital mortality is almost 60%. These data led the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare sepsis a global health priority. Emergency department is a place where the first medical contact with a septic patient is most likely to occur, emergency physicians play a essential role in the early phases of patient management. The aim of these clinical recommendations is to present the early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of sepsis and septic shock in the emergency medicine.
