Abstract

Anticoagulants are essential drugs for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism. Likewise, they are also the main therapy used to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. The launch of anticoagulants has shown to be a significant step in medical treatment, enabling the prevention and control of thromboembolic events in various diseases and conditions. In recent decades, the continued development of new anticoagulation agents such as direct oral thrombin and factor Xa inhibitors provided the medical world with a wider selection of tools to combat this serious disease. This study will demonstrate the evolution and current state of anticoagulant therapy, with particular emphasis on the newest classes of anticoagulants and their use in clinical practice.
