Artifi cial intelligence and decision-making in medicine: The view of key stakeholders of the healthcare system

Sažetak
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare and changing the everyday aspects of physicians’ work. The potential for using AI in clinical practice is significant, but raising awareness of the risks and challenges associated with its implementation is also necessary. Digital Healthcare Ethics Laboratory (Digit-HeaL) conducted a qualitative study with key stakeholders of the healthcare system in 2021. Key stakeholders included physicians, patients, healthcare managers, IT engineers, lawyers, and public policy makers. The study employed hypothetical future scenarios. The paper presents results related to physicians’ opinions on using artificial intelligence (AI) in decision-making and the perspectives of other key stakeholders regarding trust in cases where AI diagnostic conclusions differ from those of physicians. Physicians in the study emphasized that decision-making cannot be entirely entrusted to technology and that AI requires human authority, i.e., control and oversight by physicians. Physicians view AI as an additional tool and see their role as integrating data and making decisions. Other key stakeholders in the healthcare system expressed greater trust in physicians than in AI when their diagnoses differed, except for lawyers, who showed equal trust in both physicians and AI. In conclusion, the full potential of AI in medicine can be realized through the collaborative efforts of key stakeholders, guiding development towards creating a supplementary tool for decision-making rather than an autonomous system.
