Abstract

The article examines the reception of Croatian-born thinker Ivan Illich’s works (1926–2002) in Croatia. Illich was a world-renowned philosopher known for critiquing modern, industrial society and its associated institutions, including education and medicine. His areas of study also encompassed theology, gender issues, ecology, and social and linguistic anthropology. The first part of the paper provides a brief biography of Illich and an overview of the fundamental ideas behind his critique and social theory. The second, central part of the paper is divided into three subchapters that present translations of Illich’s works and essays, texts with comprehensive and direct thematization of Illich’s ideas or life path, and other, secondary receptions. The final chapter offers a concluding review in which the authors realize that the Croatian reception of Illich up until the last fifteen years was very weak. However, since then, there has been a noticeable increase in works that probe Illich’s ideas, although some areas of his thought remain to be discovered and explored.
