Abstract

/Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental
disorder. It is a persistent
and complex condition that affects all areas of life. Patients with ADHD often have comorbid
disorders, including substance use disorder (SUD). The aim of this narrative review is to highlight
the problem of substance use disorder in patients with ADHD and to summarize the studies conducted
so far which indicate the importance of recognizing ADHD in patients with SUD. Research suggests
that early recognition of ADHD and its treatment can prevent, i.e. reduce the risk of substance use
disorder in some individuals. The overlap between the symptoms of ADHD and SUD makes ADHD difficult
to diagnose. In patients with ADHD, addiction sets in earlier, there are more relapses and the
problems are more complex, requiring a different treatment and approach compared to patients with
SUD who do not have ADHD.
