Sažetak

Autoimmune diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders with multifactorial causes. Most autoimmune diseases are more common in women than in men. They are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in young and middle-aged women. An important role in the immune response and initiation of the autoimmune process is played by the biological sex, i.e. the X chromosome. Another important factor is seks hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Various sex-related occupational and recreational activities may also contribute to the development of autoimmune disease. In addition to the increased frequency, autoimmune diseases in women often have specific phenotypic characteristics and may have a poorer therapeutic response.
