Sažetak

In the paper, Croatian antonym verbal idioms with the zoonym components zlatna ribica, slon and the derivative slonovski are analysed. Short-term memory and long-term memory are reflected in their meaning. Short-term memory refers to small amounts of information that people can remember for a short period of time. Long-term memory involves the storage and recall of information over a long period of time. Idioms with the component zlatna ribica have the meaning ‘quickly forget the information we hear or read’: imati pamćenje kao zlatna ribica, pamtiti kao zlatna ribica. On the other hand, the meaning of the idioms including components slon and slonovski are based on the definition of long-term memory; it refers not only to the capacity to store information over a long period of time, but also to remembering all bad things that happened in someone’s life: imati pamćenje kao slon, pamtiti kao slon, imati slonovsko pamćenje, imati pamćenje slona. The relation between above-mentioned zoonyms and the meaning of idioms is shown. Examples of usage are presented; they show the context in which the idioms are usually used. Phrasal equivalents with the zoonym components in other languages are given.
