Sažetak

Jagić's book Historija književnosti naroda hrvatskoga i srbskoga (knjiga prva:
staro doba) / History of the Literature of the Croatian and Serbian Peoples (Book
One: Old Age) from 1867 was well received and evaluated by literary historians
(Hercigonja 1975, Kolumbić 1986, Damjanović 2006), where Jagić's tendency to
approach the literary work from a broader cultural aspect is especially highlighted.
There are fewer observations about Jagić's writing style; we can testify about
the style of his debates indirectly from his notes on sharp philological criticisms
written in German and Croatian (cf. Katičić 2007 and Kapetanović 2007). In this
paper, from the aspect of functional linguistics, the use of evaluative expressions,
i.e. culturally marked lexemes, in the function of expressing a negative attitude
towards individuals and groups, in Jagić's History of Literature is analyzed. A selection
of examples of slurs, as lexemes that have the function of pejorative marking
of individuals or groups with regard to gender, ethnic and other collective and
stereotypical characteristics (for example: divlji “wild”, barbarski “barbaric”, bablje
“grandmotherly / old women’s”), and expressives, as lexemes marked by the emotional
attitude of the speaker, which are not subject to verify the truth (for example vajmeh “ouch / oh my”) or which are contextually conditioned (neki “some”),
especially in Jagić's text and especially in the texts he translates and retells is made
through close reading. Representation and syntagmatic connections of selected
occurrences were investigated by searching the digitized book. The collected data
contribute to illuminating the discourse of historians of literature until the end of
the 19th century, and especially to illuminating the peculiarities of Vatroslav Jagić's
style.
