VATROSLAV JAGIĆ AND LJUBOMIR MILETIČ – SCIENCE AND FRIENSHIP

Abstract
The aim of this article is to illuminate the scholarly collaboration and friendship
between Vatroslav Jagić and Ljubomir Miletič, both distinguished Slavists of their
respective era. Jagić, a Croatian Slavist, with distinguished statute, commanded
influence within the framework of Slavic studies during the latter half of 19th century
and the initial decades of the 20th century. It is noteworthy that his scholarly
pursuits transcended the confines of South Slavic languages, encompassing the
broader scope of his interest. Ljubomir Miletič, over the course of his professional
career, recognition as a luminary within Bulgarian Slavic studies. His contribution
gained recognition within the expansive realm of Slavic scientific realm. The collaboration
between Jagić and Miletič was marked by profound intellectual connection.
An area of their shared focus was the inquiry into Macedonian dialectology.
Despite an ostensibly consensual stance on the classification of these dialects, the 197
intricacies of Jagić’s inquiries, particularly those directed to the authors contributing
to the Slavic Encyclopedia, impart a nuanced dimension to their collaboration.
The Macedonian dialects constituted a substantive part of their cooperative
endeavors. Jagić’s keen interest laid in the socio-political landscape of this Ottoman
region, undergoing a tumultuous struggle for autonomy. Additionally, their
discourse extended to the realm of broader collaboration, especially within the
context of South Slavic scholarship. Miletič, in a publication dedicated to Jagić in
1926, overtly asserted depth of their friendship. This assertion is supported by
their correspondences, replete with intricate detail about their personal lives.
