Abstract
The activity of the Glagolitic Press in Senj, which worked intermittently from
1494 to 1508, became better known to Croatian philology thanks to Ivan Berčić,
who managed to collect its editions in his rich collection of Glagolitic manuscript
and printed books. In his work Njekoliko staroslavenskih i hrvatskih knjiga što
pisanih, što tiskanih glagolicom…, he describes Naručnik plebanušev [Manipulus
curatorum], Mirakuli Slavne Deve Marije [Miracles of the Famous Virgin Mary],
Transit svetoga Jerolima [Transit of St. Jerolim] and Korizmenjak [Lent], which will
soon be joined by an incomplete copy of the Missal based on typographical similarities.
The printing of the Missal Berčić dates back to 1507, with which date
it entered the first part of the bibliography of Croatian printed books published
by Ivan Kukuljević in 1860. Among these works, Naručnik plebanušev [Manipulus
curatorum] was considered the first edition from Senj because its colophon
states that it was printed in 1507 and points out that the master Grgur Senjanin
came from Venice specifically for this printing, which was understood as a record
of the founding of the printing house. This assumption will be challenged at the
end of the 19th century, primarily thanks to Vatroslav Jagić. By looking at a more
complete copy of the same missal discovered in a Munich antiquarian, Jagić will
determine that it was printed in 1494 and that it is also the only missal that would
have been printed in that Glagolitic printing house, and in addition, contribute to
clarifying the role of Blaž Baromić in founding the first domestic printing house.
Although Jagić's bibliography does not contain extensive works that are more systematically
devoted to Glagolitic press in Senj, his contribution to the knowledge
of the oldest Croatian Glagolitic printing is by no means negligible. In this paper,
the part of his bibliography that discusses topics related to the work of the aforementioned
printing house is presented in more detail.
