VATROSLAV JAGIĆ IN THE HISTORY OF CROATIAN DIALECTOLOGY

Abstract
One of the greatest Slavic philologists Vatroslav Jagić was not a dialectologist by
profession. However, his dialectological interventions, as stated by D. Brozović,
were extremely important in the first period of the development of Croatian
dialectology. Most information about Jagić's approach to Croatian dialects comes
from his discussions, in which he is primarily interested in the past of Croatian or
other South Slavic languages, as well as the oldest written monuments and literature,
created either during his days in Zagreb (such as the discussion Iz prošlosti hrvatskoga
jezika from 1864 or Adrianskoga mora sirena: hrvatski epos XVII. vieka),
or for his activities at foreign departments (such as the discussion Jedno poglavlje
iz povijesti južnoslavenskih jezika from 1895, published while he was a professor
at the Vienna University of Slavic Studies). Other sources of his work on Croatian
dialects are recensions and reviews of articles by his contemporaries of dialectologists,
such as the often quoted review of Rešetar's discussion on the borders of
the Chakavian language from 1891, a review of the text Čakavske osobine u današnjem
dubrovačkom dijalektu by Marcel Kušar from 1891, etc. Jagić's views and conclusions
about Croatian dialects can also be read in Spomeni mojega života, edited
posthumously by Milan Rešetar in 1930 and 1934, and published by the Serbian
Royal Academy in Belgrade. In this paper, the evolution of Jagić's knowledge about
inter-dialect relations in the Croatian area and the place of such starting points in
the then and contemporary dialectological thought will be highlighted.
