Abstract
At the turn of the XX century, the language and historical circumstances in Istria
were sensibly different from those in the rest of Croatia. Although the Croatian
language in Istria was equivalent to other languages spoken in the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy by law, in reality its status was rather precarious. Naša sloga was
the first newspaper issued in the Croatian language in Istria and it was published
from 1870 to 1915. The influence of its language had great impact on the national
integration process, as well as on the education of ordinary men and, both directly
and indirectly, on literacy. This newspaper finally gave the Istrian Croats a
reading that they could understand. The majority of texts published in Naša sloga
were unsigned, except for some sections and supplements, mostly poems, novels
and various letters. Among the few signed articles, there are some texts written
by Vatroslav Jagić, who was already well known at that time., this contribution
primarily analyses the various texts in which Jagić and his language studies were
mentioned and commented. Subsequently, we analyse the articles written by Jagić
and published in Naša sloga by considering the specific spelling, orthographic and
linguistic properties of his texts compared to the principles that were valid at that
point in time and to those applied in the other articles. The analysis points out the
actual contribution provided by Jagić to the first Istrian newspaper published in
the Croatian language, which was remarkably important for the standardisation of
the Croatian language in Istria.
