ABOUT JAGIĆ'S REVIEWS IN IZABRANI KRAĆI SPISI

Sažetak
The paper will discuss several selected works by Jagić that were published in
Matica's edition as Izabrani kraći spisi (1848). From his extensive oeuvre, those
works in which he wrote and/or discussed language and language issues were singled
out. More precisely, several of Jagić's reviews/views will be presented in order
to gain insight into his reviewing procedures and views on language and spelling
issues. Four of his contributions will be analyzed: Istorija hrvatskoga pravopisa latinskim
slovima, Gramatika i stilistika hrvatskoga ili srpskoga književnog jezika and
Rječnik hrvatskoga jezika (volumes I and II). The analysis will show what Jagić was
aiming for when presenting negative and positive criticism and how different his
evaluation procedures are from what we call a review today.
