Abstract

Legal and economic analyses of the development and functioning of manorial estates in the territory of Royal Slavonia have not been absent in legal historiography and are of inestimable importance for understanding their role in the modernization processes of the Monarchy. However, when it comes to the analysis of the legal status of owners of manorial estates, especially with regard to the duty of taking care of churches and schools in the area of manorial estates, a significant gap is still present. In order to fill the gap that has arisen when it comes to the legal status of the lords, this research will use a legal historical and comparative method to analyze the legal position of the owners of the Belje, Valpovo and Eltz estates, i.e. the Vukovar lordship, in relation to the provision of churches and, secondarily, schools in the area of the estate, and investigate the possible impact of the exercise of prerogatives on the improvement of the social and cultural status of their subjects. The study of the patronage rights of the owners of three large estates in the area of eastern Croatia within the scope of this research aims to result, among other things, in deepening the knowledge about the functioning of feudal estates in the area of Royal Slavonia, today's eastern Croatia.
