Abstract

Croatian dialects are an essential identity component of the Croatian language and its speakers, and the inclusion of native idioms in the teaching of the Croatian language contributes to the recognition of the essence and characteristics of the Croatian language as a whole. From such points of departure, this paper examines the relationship to the native idiom in the methodological literature and in the program documents on which the teaching of the Croatian language is based, with special regard to the Chakavian native language component that characterizes the Chakavian speech in the area of Dalmatia. The paper also refers to the need to include the native idiom to a greater extent not only in school curricula but also in regular teaching of the Croatian language, and the possibilities of its inclusion are exemplified by methodical approaches and procedures harmonized with the Curriculum and can be the basis for paying more attention to the native language component the environment in which the school operates. Emphasis is placed on the subject teaching of the Croatian language because, as has been noticed, much more is done on cultivating dialects in the classroom than in the subject teaching.
