Abstract

Matko Peić created both literary works and paintings but it is the literary component of his prolific oeuvre that elevated him to one of the most outstanding Croatian writers of the second half of the 20th century, especially his cult travelogues: 'Skitnje' ('Strolls'), 'Jesen u Poljskoj' ('Autumn in Poland'), 'Europske skitnje' ('European strolls') and his exceptional lyrical work. The painting component is, however, not analogous to the literary component in terms of reception. It is therefore my intention to focus on Peić’s art work as a major art theme and interpret it precisely from the point of view of insufficient reception in the academic community and the wider cultural context in order to emphasize this disproportion. From the point of view of functional styles, this fact is explained in a kind of literary and artistic discourse that is close to Peić’s sensibility, in which the entry of personal testimony is not inappropriate because it underlines the documentary component of the text. A more exhaustive analytical approach to his work will be possible only after completing the catalog of the entire painting oeuvre presented at the retrospective exhibition.
