Abstract
Artists from Požega, his hometown and from the wider area of Eastern Croatia occupy a special place in Matko Peić’s (1923–1999) works, The publication Croatian Painters and Sculptors: Slavonia – Syrmia, published as a special edition by 'Matica Hrvatska' from Osijek in 1969 under the editorship of Ivo Mažuran is dedicated to these artists. The author himself denies this work the intention of anthological consideration of painters and sculptors from Slavonia and Syrmia, i.e., a systematic his torical review of their achievements, but points to several prominent figures who are to be considered when it comes to Croatian fine art on the whole. Among these personalities there are two of prominent names that belong to the Osijek Drawing School: Hugo Hötzendorf and Adolf Waldinger. Peić approaches their oeuvres in an essayistic way that deals with the topic without the critical scientific apparatus common for historical and artistic reviews. Despite this, the texts bring the most important biographical information about the artists and cite a number of researchers of their oeuvres (e.g. Artur Schneider, Ljubo Babić, Ernest Dirnbach). Peić contextualizes Hötzendorf and Waldinger’s work in his way, through lapidary citation of various artistic and literary influences, starting from the manuscript work of the revivalist Luka Ilić Oriovčanin and the works of the painter Stjepan Marjanović, his collborator and then continuing through Dutch masters of landscape to the pantheism of a naturalist Alexander von Humboldt all the way to the literary works of Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau. Bringing a brief overview of Hötzendorf and Waldinger’s work and their points of contact in teacher-student relations, Peić also insists on comparative differences in their creativity, pointing out that Hötzendorf’s works are like a graphic fantasy whereas Waldinger’s are a graphic observation.
