PROLEGOMENA TO THE OPUS OF THREE ARCHITECTS FROM POŽEGA - Ferdinand Florschütz, Dragan Petrik and Branko Petrović

Abstract
Požega and its surroundings are associated with numerous notable people from various professions, such as writers, poets, painters, historians, musicians, journalists, lawyers, etc. There are, however, no comprehensive biographies of architects and urban planners who were born in Požega and worked in the world. Three architects who were born in Požega in the first quarter of the 20th century were selected. They are Ferdinand Florschütz (1907-1946), Dragan Petrik (1901-1988) and Branko Petrović (1922-1975). The goal of the work is not only to complete the biography of architects in the context of Croatian architecture of the 20th century and valorize their architectural creativity in Croatia and the world, but also to recognize the biography as a contribution to the cultural identity of the city making it more interesting for visitors.
Since they were born in Požega, the paper first provides an overview of the construction opportunities in the city towards the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, followed by their biographical data. The conclusion brings valorisation of their creative work and various ideas how they could enrich the cultural offerings of the city. The research was first based on data collection by getting in touch with family members, gaining insight into various literature (books, exhibition catalogues, press, etc.) and available documentation from various institutions. An inductive-deductive method was used to draw the conclusion. In addition to Croatia, the three architects worked in today’s Austria, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, the Republic of South Africa, Germany, North Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The main characteristic of Florschüt’s activity is following avant-garde trends. Although the creativity of Petrik and Petrović can be divided into several stages, Petrik is mostly characterized by the engineering component and Petrović by the organizational component. What is more, the mentioned architects are characterized by exceptional working energy and creativity.
