Abstract
The political activities of Ante Starčević, over a time of more than sixty years, certainly influenced the political and social life of numerous political parties and political actors. Even during his lifetime, and especially after his death, Starčević’s precise, unwavering and consistent policy led to political disagreements not only among the people who made up the political life of the Croatian lands within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy at the time. Through a combination of turbulent global political circumstances, Austrian political and economic pressure, some politicians from Dalmatia and Banska Hrvatska turned a new page in their relations with the then government, or rather a new direction (course) towards the possible idea of political independence of Croatia. In what ways did the leaders of the new course seek models for strengthening independence from the Habsburg court and the Hungarian government and to what extent, if at all, Starčević’s political thought was contained in their programs, this work will show. Using the party newspapers of the time (Narodni list, Hrvat, Novi list, Crvena Hrvatska, Jedinstvo), relevant literature, correspondence of party leaders and minutes of sessions of the Dalmatian Parliament, the paper answers several research questions. The primary focus is on how the Dalmatian Narodni and Right-wing leaders came closer to the programs of political Serbs and Italians and whether they retained certain Right-wing ideas and thoughts. Finally, the paper confirms the thesis that the politicians of the Novi kurs movement, through their actions, achieved a definitive departure from Starčević’s politics, considering his ideas and principles anachronistic and unrealistic in the fight for Croatian independence.
