Kerubin Šegvić as a Biographer of Ante Starčević (1896–1914) (Summary)

The focus of this article is on the book Dr. Ante Starčević. Njegov život i njegova djela (Dr Ante Starčević. His Life and His Works) published in Zagreb in 1911 by well-known Croatian intellectual Kerubin Šegvić. The article explores the background of the book from the time of Šegvić’s acquaintance with Ante Starčević shortly before his death in February 1896 until first reviews of Šegvić’s book that were published before the start of the First World War. Special attention is given to political context in Banska Croatia, as Šegvić was one of the leaders of Starčević’s Party of Right which was competing for Starčević’s legacy with the Croatian Party of Right (that was a part of the Croat-Serb Coalition) and the Pure Party of Right. It is argued that Šegvić’s book offered the first significant and complete biography of Ante Starčević based on original research, but it also contained short polemical utterances against other political parties that were active in Croatia at the time. The main topic of Šegvić’s book was the core of Starčević’s political ideology, which was parliamentary struggle for Croatian historical state right, i.e., the historical right of Croatia (according to Starčević, in personal union with Hungary and Austria) to its independence and territorial integrity. Although the reviews that appeared before the start of the First World War were partisan according to party affiliation or sympathies of their authors (most significantly, Antun Gustav Matoš and Jovan Skerlić), this article concludes that Šegvić’s book was more faithful to the original teachings of Ante Starčević than the interpretations that were put forward by the Croatian Party of Right or the Pure Party of Right. This was largely due to the political principles of Starčević’s Party of Right led by Mile Starčević (the nephew of Ante Starčević).
