Abstract

This paper represents an attempt to locate the position of the medieval parish church of St. John in Tolići and Svetoivanac, and to examine its potential ties to the parish in Lešće na Dobri, which was founded in the early modern age. Based on primary sources, mainly tithe records and records of 17th and 18th century canonical visitations, as well as other sources, we have determined that the parish church of St. John was located in the area of Zvečaj. This is also where the other places mentioned as being in the vicinity of Tolići, such as Babina Gora, used to exist. Due to Ottoman raids and wars with the Ottoman Empire, these villages were wiped out and do not exist any more. The church in question was mentioned in 1334. as a parish church in Tolići, and in 1501. the name of its location was listed as Svetoivanac, which means Saint John’s in Croatian. It is therefore likely that a village developed around the church, or that an existing village was renamed after it. The church was mentioned as desolate and abandoned in 1558. and it is likely that its parish was extinguished sometime before. However, the memory of its existence likely survived, as a chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist was founded in Zvečaj Castle in the late 17th century, and later a new church was built in Donji Zvečaj. The parish of Tolići and Svetoivanac is therefore not identical to the parish of Lešće na Dobri, as earlier studies presumed. Nevertheless, the parish of Lešće na Dobri came to occupy much of the space of the medieval parishes of the Diocese of Zagreb which ceased to exist during the early modern age. It is likely that a part of the parish of Svetoivanac came under the jurisdiction of the Lešće parish, which is confirmed by 18th century sources. The rest of the extinguished parish was taken by the parish in nearby Sveti Petar Mrežnički. The parish of Lešće na Dobri, together with the area it administered to, came under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Modruš. In the paper we also dealt with the problem caused by the fact that the village Lešće does not exist any more, and its original location is unclear. We determined that the name Lešće was used until the end of the 18th century for the village Tomašići, which still exists. The question remains why the parish was originally named after Lešće, as the parish church, dedicated to St. George, was located in the village of Gorinci at least since the second half of the 17th century.
