Abstract

The present paper deals with the use of conjunctive adverbials in L2 and L1. Since conjunctive
adverbials are important means of cohesion, their appropriate use is of fundamental impor-
tance for the successful communication of messages.
The paper analyses the texts of two groups of learners, native speakers of Croatian, whose L2
is German or English. The participants’ L2 language proficiency corresponds to the CEFR
level B2. In the study, the number of tokens and types, the frequency of occurrence of particular
semantic groups of conjunctive adverbials and the appropriateness and correctness of
their use were analysed.
According to the results, both more tokens and types occur in the L2 than in the L1. L2
learners of German prefer additive, causal and modal conjunctive adverbials, which operate
predominantly locally, whereas L2 learners of English use significantly more adversative,
temporal and conclusive conjunctive adverbials, which generally operate at global text level.
This writing strategy is also noticeable in the learners’ L1. The differences in inappropriate
and incorrectly used conjunctive adverbials between L2 and L1 are not statistically significant,
with the exception of syntax errors in L2 German.
