Abstract
A distorted wave Born (DWB) approximation is used to examine rearrangement scattering in the exchange reaction H + H2 → H2 + H. The interaction of the three particles is described by the Porter-Karplus potential surface in order to permit comparison with quasiclassical and close - coupling calculations. The T-matrix elements are calculated by the method of Miller. Our calculations are carried for a complete and a linear DWBA. Total reaction cross section and differential cross section are estimated for the 0 → 0 rotational transition. The results are compared with the available measurements, especially with the DWB calculations of Karplus and Tang. The DWB quantum calculations for the total reaction cross section yield a significantly higher effective threshold energy than does the quasiclassical treatment.
