Abstract

Teaching traditional music is a part of Music Education classes in all three curriculum domains: listening and introduction to music, expressing oneself through music and with music, and music in context. This shows the openness teachers rely on when selecting and designing traditional music and culture teaching content and the observation of musical and cultural phenomena from different perspectives. The paper presents a study conducted to examine student preferences towards traditional music and how Croatian traditional music is taught in schools. Based on the study results, it is evident that students have no significant interest in learning traditional content in Music Education classes. Younger students, especially girls, show preferential openness towards activities related to singing and dancing to traditional songs. The expressed positive attitudes allow for numerous opportunities that should be recognized and used in Music Education classes and extracurricular activities.
