Abstract

Somatic idioms are those in which at least one component is a part of the body. Somatic phraseology occupies an important place in the linguistic phraseological corpus because somatic idioms are one of the most common groups of idioms in many languages. The paper presents the issues related to somatic idioms and explains the disagreements among phraseologists regarding the classification of certain idioms within the somatic phraseological corpus, which forms the theoretical framework of the paper together with the chapter on the structural analysis of idioms. The phraseological analysis of the novels “Dvori od oraha”, “Freelander”, and “Selidba” by Miljenko Jergović recorded a large number of somatic idioms whose symbolism is stated and explained following the theoretical framework set out in the paper, after which the somatic idioms were analyzed structurally and semantically, indicating the context in which they appear in the novels mentioned above.
